[ARCHIVED] Nonpartisan Voter Education Workshop

Deputy Mayor Figueroa, administrators and community members.

The Village of Hempstead recently hosted its first-ever Nonpartisan Voter Education Workshop in Kennedy Park. The purpose of this event was to increase government accessibility by providing a practical, nonpartisan and educational forum while teaching the public about their voting rights and New York State’s electoral process. The event was free to the public, and attendees were able to register to vote during the event.

Presenter Adam Gitlin, Esq., of the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law, lead an interactive presentation instructing residents on how to register to vote, voting rights, documentation necessary on election day, how to use the ballot and how to obtain an absentee ballot leading up to election day. Following the presentation, Mr. Gitlin answered all residents’ questions about the voting process during a question and answer session.

The League of Women Voters of Nassau County assisted in helping voters register both in person and via www.vote411.org. Vote411 is a nonpartisan voter’s guide created by a unique partnership between The League of Women Voters of Nassau County and Google. Through the website, voters can see the candidates on their ballots, compare candidates’ positions side-by-side and print a “ballot” indicating preferences so voters can make informed decisions on Election Day.
