Henry Conyers
Henry was born in Summerton, South Carolina. While still a youngster, his family migrated to Brooklyn, New York where he received his education in the NYC Public School System.
After graduating from high school, Henry enrolled and studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). In the middle of his studies, he was drafted into the US Army and assigned to special duty with the Central Intelligence Agency, after serving in the Army Henry was Honorably Discharged. Soon after while working as a computer operator and systems analyst, he pursued higher education and eventually earned an Associates Degree in Marketing at NYC Community College.
Henry worked as a NYS Court Officer before beginning his tenure in 1985 with the State’s Department of Correctional Services where he is currently employed. In 1993, Henry received his Baccalaureate of Science in Criminal Justice from the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT).
Henry’s interest and fervor in community activism and civic participation started at a very early age as he witnessed his father’s involvement advocating for equal education for black children in Summerton, South Carolina. In fact, the very same petition that his father signed to eradicate school segregation in the south brought about the Briggs v. Elliot (1952) litigation and ultimately the landmark United States Supreme Court decision of Brown v. the Board of Education (1954). As a young man, Henry resolved to make a difference in the world.
Henry continues to live out his commitment to the community, he was elected Vice President of Council #82, Local 2197, elected President of Council 82, Local 2197, has been a member of the American Correctional Association. Henry is currently President of the Correctional Legal and Scholarship Fund, Inc. Henry is a member of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), the nations largest community organization of low and moderate-income families working for social justice and stronger communities. Henry is also a member of the Hempstead/Freeport/Roosevelt and Lakeview NAACP.
In March 2005, Henry was elected as a Trustee for the Village of Hempstead, and in April 2005, he was appointed Deputy Mayor of the Village of Hempstead.
Henry is married to Lorraine Conyers they reside in the Village of Hempstead, N.Y.
