Hiring Requirements
Specific residency requirements are subject to change and will be made known at the posting of the next Nassau County Civil Service Testing for the position of Police Officer.
Successful candidates that are legal residents of the Inc. Village of Hempstead at the time of their application for the exam and who maintain said residence until appointment, can receive preference in appointment.
As of yet, Nassau County Civil Service Commission does NOT have a testing date scheduled for the position of Police Officer.

Divisions

Deputy Chief Willie Dixon
The largest of the divisions, The responsibility of the Patrol Division is that of primary emergency responder. The members of the Patrol Division operate marked police patrol vehicles and are on duty seven days a week, twenty four hours a day. When you call the Hempstead Police Department with an emergency, it is a member of the Patrol Division who responds, takes action or recommends follow-up by another unit.
Supervising the Patrol Division on every shift is a Patrol Supervisor, a member holding the rank of Sergeant. The Watch Commander, a member of the department generally holding the rank of Lieutenant, supervises the daily Headquarters operations and is in command of the Department in the absence of the Chief of Police or one of his Executive Officers.

Investigations is responsible for narcotic drug law enforcement, the followup investigations of crimes reported to the Department and other investigations as directed by the Chief of Police.

The Juvenile Aid Bureau also administers the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) Program. Annually the program is delivered to approximately five hundred and fifty (550) students attending the fifth and sixth grades.

The Traffic & Safety Bureau is also responsible for coordinating parades, and special events necessitating traffic control as well as Department fleet maintenance. The Commanding Officer ofte Traffic Division also sits on the Village Traffic and Safety Board which promulgates parking regulations and other traffic restrictions throughout the Village.

C.O.P.S. are the liaisons between Civic Associations, Community Groups and Business Organizations in the Village. A member of the Community Oriented Police Services Unit is assigned to individual Associations or Groups, attends their monthly meetings, and is responsible for quality of life type violations and other matters of a non-emergency nature reported to the Police. The officers of the Unit patrol on foot, in marked and unmarked vehicles and on bicycles.

Officers of this unit address the gang issues throughout the Village and work closely with other agencies to effectively monitor, prevent & terminate illegal gang activities.
The C.O.P.S. Unit also monitors the false alarms, both residential and commercial. We encourage all alarm users to prevent false alarms through equipment maintenance, education on the usage of alarm system, and how to cancel an alarm. False alarms waste taxpayer dollars and law enforcement time.
Graffiti can be reported to the C.O.P.S. Unit in order that proper action be taken for its removal.

The Domestic Violence Unit is responsible for the education, prevention and enforcement of Domestic Violence cases.
The Department is augmented by approximately fifty civilian uniform and clerical members. They are responsible for varied jobs such as School Crossing Guards, Neighborhood Aides, Communications Operators and Data Entry.
